What Are Dentures and Partials ?
Dentures are removable replacements that can be used in the entire mouth, or missing parts of the teeth.
A complete set of dentures is used when the entire mouth is missing teeth on the top row, bottom row, or both. Partial dentures are removable bridges used when there are some natural teeth remaining. Dentures and Partials can be used to prevent the position of other teeth from changing.
Types of Dentures and Partials
There are two types of complete dentures.
Conventional dentures are made after the teeth are removed and the gum tissue has had time to heal. Conventional dentures are typically ready for placement in one to three months. Immediate dentures are created in advance and are available to be worn as soon as the teeth are removed. Immediate dentures are typically a temporary solution because bones and gums can shrink during the healing period following a tooth removal. In this instance, adjustments will need to be made to ensure the ideal fit for a natural look.
What is the Process for Getting Complete or Partial Dentures ?
If tooth removal is necessary that process will begin first.
Dentures candidates will have their mouth and jaw measured and an impression will be taken. The impression is critical for ensuring proper bite relationship, as well as the proper relationship of the appliance to the size of your face. After the impression is made, a temporary set of dentures may be applied if needed so the patient can ensure that the fit, color and shape are suitable.
Once the dentures are fitted, there is a small adjustment period for some patients. Some dentures may need to be worn for an extended period of time to ensure that no adjustments need to be made to the fitting.
Patients may experience a “break-in” period for their first time receiving new dentures. This usually lasts up to two months. New dentures can feel loose for a short period of time during the adjustment. When the muscles of the cheeks and tongue learn to keep them in place, the dentures will feel more natural and comfortable. It is not unusual for minor irritation to occur. Saliva flow can also increase but will diminish when the mouth adjusts.
Care of your Denture

This also allows your gums to breathe while you sleep.
