Types of Dental Bridges

• Cantilever: Cantilever dental bridge is different from the traditional ones as it uses only a single anchor tooth. It’s not in common practice as the bridges can be placed at the front of the mouth only. The reason is that it can place too much stress on the single tooth at the back of the mouth. The benefit of the cantilever bridge is that it saves time and money. The types of dental bridges procedure is highly recommended for individuals with no teeth on both sides of the missing tooth.
• Maryland Bonded Bridges: A Maryland bonded bridge structure is similar to the traditional except it uses a metal or porcelain framework as anchors. The framework removes the issue of reshaping the adjacent teeth. They are made from a metal framework with porcelain fused to metal teeth. The pontic or artificial teeth are affixed to the nearby healthy teeth with the help of metal or porcelain wings on both sides of the bridge. One should note that Maryland bonded bridges are more affordable than traditional bridges. However, the success of the procedure will depend on the strength and durability of the adhesive. In some cases, metal frameworks can cause tooth discoloration.
• Implant Supported Bridge: Implant-supported dental bridges structure is the same as the traditional bridges. Instead of using healthy teeth as anchors, here dental implants do the job. That’s why this type of bridge doesn’t need any adjacent teeth. It can be used to fill large gaps caused by multiple missing teeth. Importantly, dental implants are popular for their durability and for restoring the functionality of the teeth. It’s more invasive and expensive than all the dental bridges mentioned above.
